Robust in Signal Turbulence

Why Positioning Falls Short When It Matters Most

Have you encountered these frustrating situations?

  • Urban disorientation: Under overpasses or between high-rise buildings, the navigation arrow suddenly drifts, directing you into the wrong lane.
  • Signal blackout: When entering an underground parking garage, positioning becomes unavailable, and the exit cannot be determined.
  • Loss-of-control risk: A UAV flying in complex urban environments deviates from its path due to momentary signal loss, posing safety risks.

These are not simply cases of “poor signal.” Rather, GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System, such as GPS and BeiDou) signals in complex urban environments are subject to “signal turbulence”—a combination of multipath reflections, physical obstructions, and electromagnetic interference.

Conventional single-antenna receivers are like trying to listen to music in a noisy concert, unable to distinguish the true signal from echoes and noise.

01 Root Causes: The Achilles’ Heel of Conventional Positioning Solutions

To solve the problem, the underlying challenges must first be understood. Conventional or single-solution approaches often involve trade-offs:

  1. “Short-sighted”Single-Antenna GNSS

Like listening with only one ear, such systems are easily misled by delayed “phantom signals” caused by reflections from surrounding surfaces (multipath), resulting in significant position drift—one of the primary causes of poor urban positioning accuracy.

  1. “Forgetful” Pure Inertial Navigation (IMU)

Like walking blindfolded, such systems are independent of external signals and offer high short-term accuracy. However, IMU errors accumulate over time. Low-cost IMUs can drift by tens of meters within seconds, while high-precision IMUs are costly.

  1. “Loose” Integration

Like two components glued together, such systems simply combine GNSS and IMU outputs (loosely coupled). Under dynamic conditions or signal interruptions, they tend to separate, failing to achieve true performance gains.

02 Solution Approach: A Three-Layer Defense Architecture

In response to these challenges, the PBOX high-precision integrated navigation system, together with the AI-4L14L5 anti-interference antenna, forms a hardware–software integrated solution built on three proprietary core technologies:

Defense Layer 1: Hardware Foundation — L1/L5 Dual-Frequency Phase-Consistent Array Antenna

  • Challenge: In conventional multi-antenna systems designed to receive L1 and L5 dual-frequency signals, physical height differences exist, and the wavelengths of the two frequencies differ, resulting in inconsistent phase centers. Like two people standing on different steps receiving separate instructions, this introduces an inherent “timing offset,” significantly hindering rapid ambiguity resolution required for high-precision RTK positioning.
  • Breakthrough: The AI-4L14L5 antenna incorporates a proprietary geometric phase compensation algorithm. It calculates satellite elevation angles in real time to dynamically correct the physical offset, while compensating dual-frequency phase differences and constraining phase center variations, achieving true phase center consistency.
  • Result:Dual-frequency phase error is reduced from approximately 0.4 cycles in conventional systems to 0.02 cycles, enabling second-level RTK fix and providing a solid foundation for centimeter-level positioning.

Defense Layer 2: Signal Purification — Intelligent Adaptive Anti-Interference

  • Challenge: Noise from co-frequency devices and intentional jammers can overwhelm weak satellite signals.
  • Breakthrough: The antenna employs a 4-element adaptive nulling technique. Like an intelligent radar, it detects the direction of incoming interference in real time and forms a null in that direction, effectively suppressing the interference.
  • Result: Even under strong interference conditions (ISR up to 100 dB), the system maintains a relatively high carrier-to-noise ratio, ensuring stable satellite tracking in electromagnetic “”

Defense Layer 3: System Intelligence — Tightly Coupled Kalman Filtering

  • Challenge: In loosely coupled systems, IMU errors accumulate rapidly during GNSS signal outages.
  • Breakthrough: The PBOX integrated navigation receiver adopts a tightly coupled GNSS/INS architecture. Rather than simply combining outputs, raw IMU motion data and GNSS observables (pseudorange and carrier phase) are optimally fused within a unified state space using a Kalman filter.
  • Result: GNSS provides a long-term absolute reference to constrain IMU drift, while the IMU supports GNSS tracking loops with motion aiding, enhancing dynamic tracking and interference resilience. During complete signal outages, error growth is reduced by 80%, enabling longer-duration and more accurate dead reckoning.

03 Field Validation in Challenging Environments

  1. Scenario 1: Urban CBD “Signal Canyon”Anti-Interference Test
  • Environment:Dense high-rise area, 50 m from a strong interference source.
  • Comparison:Conventional single-antenna receiver vs. PBOX + AI-4L14L5 system.
  • Results:

Conventional receiver: Carrier-to-noise ratio (C/N₀) drops below 25 dB-Hz, resulting in complete loss of lock.

AI-4L14L5: Successfully forms a null toward the interference source, maintaining C/N₀ above 40 dB-Hz, with positioning accuracy of 1.5 cm + 1 ppm.

  1. Scenario 2: Underground Parking Dynamic Occlusion Test
  • Environment:Vehicle entering and exiting an underground parking garage at 60 km/h, with complete signal outage for 15 seconds.
  • Comparison:Pure GNSS solution vs. PBOX tightly coupled navigation system.
  • Results:

Pure GNSS solution: Requires satellite re-acquisition after exiting, with an average of 8 seconds to restore positioning.

PBOX tightly coupled receiver: Maintains positioning continuity via high-precision IMU propagation, enabling instant recovery upon exit, with re-acquisition time < 0.5 s and a position deviation of only 0.8 m from the true exit.

04 Conclusion: Redefining the Boundaries of Precise Positioning

As autonomous driving, UAV inspection, precision agriculture, and smart cities continue to advance, stable, reliable, and accurate positioning has evolved from a value-added feature into a critical requirement.

The AI-4L1L5 antenna combined with PBOX is more than a hardware solution—it represents a commitment to trustworthy positioning across all scenarios. We believe that true technological value lies not in ideal laboratory performance, but in delivering reliable results under the most demanding real-world conditions.

Make every positioning result a reliable spatiotemporal anchor.
